Description

Kuujjuaq, the largest community in Nunavik, is located on the western shore of the Koksoak River, approximately 50 km upstream of Ungava Bay. The capital of Nunavik is home to approximately 2,055 people. Nunavik has the highest overcrowding rate in Canada with regard to housing, a problem that affects 68% of families in the area. The project awarded by the KMHB, which owns building rented to the Inuit population of Nunavik, required alternating work in an effort to minimize as much as possible the displacement of tenants.

The mandate included the renovation of 6 multifamily units of 4 dwellings each, as well as 5 multifamily units of 6 dwellings each, for a total of 54 housing units, all occupied. These units, most of which were built in the 1980s, required major upgrades to bring them into conformity with the current building code. To do this, we replaced the windows and roofs, installed insulation and replaced the heating systems.
